Order a Specialty Plate
Specialty Plates may be ordered online through myNCDMV. The NC DMV offers over 100 Specialty Plate options that feature backgrounds supporting and promoting a number of different causes and organizations. Follow the directions below to order a Specialty Plate:
Note:
- Some specialty plates may not be personalized. If you are not given the option to personalize the specialty plate you selected, this is an indication that it is not able to be personalized. For information about ordering a personalized plate, see Order a Personalized Plate.
- A new plate number will be issued when changing plates. The current plate number will be forfeited.
- Ordering a specialty plate allows you to change the background of your license plate, and in some cases, the text of your license plate.
1. Visit myNCDMV or download the iOS or Android app and create an account, log in or continue as a guest (see Create a myNCDMV profile).
2. Click on Order a Special or Personalized Plate.
2. Click Choose a plate...
3. Scroll through the list of Custom Plate Options or use the search box to choose and click on the appropriate specialty option.
4. Click Choose This Plate on the desired option.
5. Click the blue Select.
6. Enter your "current" License Plate Number and last 5 digits of your Title Number and click Search.
7. Verify your insurance information and click Yes, that's right.
8. Confirm or update your address information.
9. If the plate is eligible to be personalized, you'll be given the option to personalize the plate. If the option is available, click Personalize Plate to update the text on the plate.
10. Click Add to cart.
11. Click Go to cart.
12. Choose a Payment Method and enter a credit/debit card or link to a bank account.
Note: If you already have a payment method stored on your profile, it will appear here. Click on the payment method to select a different stored payment method, or to add a new one.
13. Click the blue Pay button to complete your order.
Note:
- Plates will take 6-8 weeks to be delivered to your designated mailing address
- Plates will be mailed by the DMV.
- Contact the DMV at 919-715-7000 or with this online form if it takes longer than 8 weeks to receive your plates.
