Ready to renew a vehicle registration in the State of North Carolina?
Here’s how:
Create an account on myNCDMV
To renew your vehicle registration in North Carolina through myNCDMV, you’ll need to know your license plate number, as well as the last five digits of your title. If you’re not sure of the latter, you can find it here.
Once you have that information, go to the myNCDMV website or download the mobile app in your smartphone app store, then click on the blue Continue to myNCDMV Services button to get started.
To create an account using your email address, click Sign Up. Otherwise, you can use your Apple, Google, or Facebook account to sign in.
You can also opt to Continue as Guest. But with an account, you can access past receipts and store your payment and vehicle information in your myNCDMV profile to make next year’s renewal even easier. In addition, you’ll also receive helpful email reminders when it’s time to renew again.
Locate your vehicle registration renewal
Begin by clicking Renew Registration & Pay Property Tax on the myNCDMV dashboard, and click Yes, let’s renew. Then, enter in your license plate and title information to locate your vehicle and click Yes, once you do.
The conversation bot will then ask you to confirm your insurance, as well as your residential address (where you live), vehicle address (where you park the vehicle) and mailing address (where you want the registration mailed to). For many users, these addresses are all the same.
Confirming your plate options
After you confirm this information, you will need to approve or make changes to your plate details. These changes involve personalizing your plate number, and selecting a specialized plate or different background. If you want to make any changes, click Change Background to order a different plate background, Change Plate to update the text only or Personalize Plate to update the background and text. If you don’t need to make any changes click I’m all set.
Note: If you're within 10 days or past your renewal due date, you won't be able to personalize your plate. You can find more information here.
Adding your order to the cart
If you are proceeding as a guest, here you’ll need to enter in contact information. After that, if everything looks good, click Add item to cart.
From there, click I’ll add something else if you have additional vehicles to renew, or choose Go to cart to complete your renewal.
Completing your payment
You can complete your payment using either a credit/debit card or bank account.
Simply click Add Credit/Debit Card on the Choose Payment Method button, fill out the necessary information, and then click on the blue button at the bottom of the page to link a card.
After you successfully add a payment method, click the blue Pay $--.-- button to complete your registration renewal.
You will receive a confirmation email once your payment is successful, and your order will be sent to the NCDMV for processing.
